Pull the fuse for the fuel pump, then start the engine. Let the engine run until it starves from lack of fuel. It'll reduce the pressure in the lines considerably.
Then, (for safety's sake) disconnect the battery before you get under there and start working.
When working with fuel, you do not want to introduce a short circuit under there by sparking oh, say, the starter solenoid to the heat shield and it's so easy to do with a tool in your hand.

Sorry....passenger's side of car in location as described above. One 10mm bolt-clamp holds the fuel filter to the frame of the vehicle. Pretty easy to do and takes only a few minutes.

On my 86 the only fuel filter is located on the inside frame rail on the passenger side under the door. I'm not sure on a 85 though.
