I have a 93 Corvette automatic. I have a Dana 44 with 3.73's
I want to swap the convertor this winter for one with a higher stahl.
I do not want it to stahl so high that it is irritating to drive around town. Looks like a Vigilante 2800 is what lots of guys are running.
Is the Vigilante convertor worth the money ? I can buy a TCI convertor
or others for considerably less money. So which convertor would you recommend and what name brand ? I do not want to buy the cheapest thing I can get and I don't want to overpay either. The convertor in my car now is some sort of aftermarket unit that stahls around 2000-2200
the best I can tell. What makes one convertor better than another if they both stahl at 2500 ? Thanks, John
JD, go with Vig converter. Ive had 3 different converters and Vigi was so smooth and streetable. Even there 3200 was streetable. 6 or 7 hudo , but well worth it.
just put in a 2800 Vig converter in my daily driver and it drives like stock.. except when you nail it!! you notice it a little when slowly climbing up driveway aprons and the like.. but normal driving it feels the same as with the factory converter..

I figured there had to be a reason it's got a following on here. Thanks
If you do not "need" the quality of a vigilante or other high dollar converter, you can have a hi po 12 inch converter hand built form many converter companies. They are good for under 500 hp stuff and hold up well, if done right. The company I use is in the $300 range for a custom stall 12 inch converter. $50 extra buys anti-balloon plates. In my opinion, this is a much better way to go than a mass produced tci or b&m type converter.

How do I get one of these ? What stahl would you suggest ?
Where do you buy a Vigilante convertor ? I looked on the web and found LM performance but I have prior experience dealing with them. I ordered something from them and they billed my credit card for it and six weeks later it was still on backorder. So I won't be buying it from them.
MrMojo and I both got ours from Finish Line Performance (a forum sponsor). They don't do a lot of C4 products, but they can hook you up with a PI convertor. https://www.flp2win.com/store/

I agree with the others that 2800 or so is a nice stall speed for an LT1. I do not like to go much higher than that on a street car. I can get one of them for you if you like. PM me if interested.
I am not against a vigilante or other high dollar converter. They are the Rolex of converters. Do buy the best quality you can afford. It is too much trouble to pull the trans down more than once. The think I admire about my company is (so far ), perfect track record.
I had a Protourqe convertor and the lock up clutch went bad after a couple years of racing. Forces lock up was at 112 MPH. I have the Vigalanty now with the 5 disc lock up and I tell you what. I would never look back.
I ordered my Precision industries vigilante converter right from PI.. Just give them a call (google the web site). they will ask you alot of questions about your car to help you select the right one.. be prepared and have the following information ready..
Car make and year
Weight of car
tire diameter (not size)
rear end gear ratio
cam duration/lift @ .050
exhaust and head modifications (if any)
type of engine (Lt1/L98)
CID
and Dyno information if you have it (max power RPM/Max Torque RPM)
I have a Vigilante 2800, and it WAS fantastic,e ven after 8000 miles of abuse by my 396LT1. The reason I say it WAS, is because after my tranny broke 3rd/4th gear, the tranny shop opened my Vigilante and it was absolutely clean. Well after them trying to set the end play twice , it is still shuddering, and each time they did it it was at different RPMs.
But, Vigilante is top notch, except for there color, PINK, why PINK paint. Its beyond me.
