backfire off the line
94 auto 21,000 if I give it more than 1/4 pedal from a stop it backfires and stumbles,any other time it's fine.anyone know any thing I can try.Please don't tell me it's the opti 
If it's out of gear and I rev it,it also doe's this so there does'nt have to be a load on it.

load dependant... that sounds like a spark related problem.
check the coil and coil wire. but at this age, the opti would not surprise me... any codes?
it could be a lack of fuel, but I would not expect a backfire from that.

Mine backfired and ran very rough on first couple of minutes of startup. Didn't do it on WOT. Cleaning MAF solved the problem. Also you may want to check for a plug arching somewhere.
