Ok, yall are probbly going to hate me but I just got a FREE 1988 corvette.(pic in avatar). BUT, its got a burned up engine, literally. It caught fire while it was being worked on and burned the engine completely. The fire dept, cut a hole in the hood to put the fire out,(ill post pics later). Other than the engine being shot, the tranny, rear end, tires, interior and body (besides hood) are in great condition.
Heres my question. should i put a fuel injected engine or carbed engine in it? Im not concered with keeping it matching numbers or anyhting. I just want a fun, fast corvette. Also, i want this car to be a 12 second car. SO, i was thinking a carbed 383, or 350 with around 375hp at the crank. Also wont it be eisier to add N20 to a carbed engine rather than a FI engine?
What are your thoughts on this project? O and i also plan to toss the non working digi gauges and put some autometers in there. what do yall think about the whole project???
Considering the fire and potential damage to wiring harness, relays, vac. lines, sensors, ECM etc. I'd probably agree with going carb, especially since your going to get rid of the digi too.And you should have no problem at all getting a carbed engine with cam, headers, head work in the low 12s.
Im leaning more toward carb because i think it will be less stuff to put in. Im definitly a FI over carb fan but in my case i think the carb would be eisier AND cheaper. I think in the long run the FI engine would cost me a lot more. your thoughts?
The fire department cut a hole in the hood to put the fire out? Man, if that thing was burning long enough for the fire department to get there I'd think the the whole front of the car would have melted.
yea i would have too but the fire was pretty much out, we had a hose going under the wheel well, but the fire dept was just making sure and put an axe through it and hit it with the hose. Ill post some pics this weekend and show yall. The only thing right now is that the hood cable melted so i cant get the hood up. Im gunna need some tech help with getting the hood off since i cant pop it. Ill post pics later and show the situation. ANy more comments on the engine choice would be great!

Something strange here, how do you work on the engine with the hood closed? If they weren't working on the engine or in the engine compartment how does the engine catch on fire?
Ok, we were working on the engine and when we tried to crank it, it sparked and lit fire. after we tried to put it out for a moment, we slammed the hood shut to try to put it out. Then stuck a hose in the wheel well and put it out pretty much. My buddy called the Fire Dept. and they were ther in like 3 min. I just got this car a week ago, so i havent began to put the engine in or anyhting. Any ideas on how to get the engine off? ill post pics soon.

Why would you think that slamming the hood would put the fire out? I would think that oxygen could still get in from underneath. How did the fire start in the first place?
They sell a hood unlocking tool. It's 3/8" steel bent at each end, you open the doors and insert the tool inside and pry on the latch to open the hood. $20.00 or less and they work.
There used to be quite a few threads with instructisons--here is a link to a site which has the dimensions. http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/74...ml#Hood%20Tool
The trick is to rotate it so it moves the latch in towards the center.
Probably best if you look at a vette with the hood open to see what you are trying to do.
