Default ECM Question?

I'm in the process of tracking down a code 43 problem on my '86 L98 iron head base coupe. The FSM diagnosis process appears to be leading me to replacing the ECM. I know I can buy an ECM and reuse my old PROM but is that the way to go? Is it possible that the only the PROM is bad? Should I be buying a new ECM and PROM? Can someone who has been down this road please chime in with your advice? Thanks for your help

Did you finally figure out what ckt 457 was?? Well, yes you can buy a rebuilt ECM and use your PROM/chip and yes the PROM can be faulty too. You can also buy a salvage vette ECM with the chip already in it, but you want know if the chip has been messed with. Others might have better advise.

I'd be surprised if the ECM/chip is bad, thats almost never the case.

I'm still not sure why the FSM refers to CKT 457 when it does not appear to exist anywhere. I followed the procedures and substituted terminal B7 (CKT 485) for CKT 457 since this is the only circuit tested previously and the FSM reads "recheck voltage". I am getting over 6 volts at B7 with the ignition off which is why I'm leaning towards a bad ECM. It's pretty bad when I can't rely on the FSM to give accurate diagnostic information for the specific problem I'm dealing with At this point I'm going to try a new ECM with my PROM and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for your help

I'm with you 100%, I also thought that the ECM/chip were bullet proof but I'm at my wits end with this code 43. I haven't been able to drive the Vette in over two weeks and it's driving me crazy At this point I'll throw in another $100 for a new ECM and see what happens. Thanks for your help

This is off topic but concerns the ECM.

Is painting the ECM from stcok aluminum to red bad? I was told it will not allow the ECM to cool off. Is this true?
