Default Torque converter advice needed, please chime in.

As the title states.. here's my problem: You can read by my sig what my mods are... the short version is a nice cam and 1.6rr's. My problem seems to be that the power range of my motor is higher in the rpm band than where my current TQ converter( stock converter in an A4 700r4) is set. My current converter seems to kick in at a very low rpm, thus hampering my launches very very much. This is a street/strip car. I'd sure like to feel a kick in the pants when I launch. Please take a moment to give your input. Thanks much!

You should send a PM to Pete K. He can help you with this. One of the nicest guys on the forum too. He is having a custom covertor made for my car now.

Do you know at what RPM your engine makes peak torque? That will give a rough estimate of where you want it for a strip car, around 500rpm below the torque peak.

For street, you wont like it so much if you go over about 2600rpm. It just wont feel right to you, and messes with your nerves. Being a 383, it shouldnt need more than that i would think.

I think in your shoes, I'd go with a 2600 Yank Stealth converter. That should give you the SOTP feeling you're looking for, and it won't be too noticeable during normal driving.

I've got a 3000 Vigilante that I installed recently while putting in the new 388 short block. Had I ordered it new, I probably would have gotten a 2800. But I got this from a forum member at a good price and so took the chance that I'd like it. I do, it's not too much at all and behaves very well in normal driving. From all impressions I've read, this is a trademark of Vigilantes and other high end converters like the Yank. I'm quite pleased with it.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. From the looks of things, based on everyone's advice, I'll be going w/ either a 2500 or 2600 TC. I've never heard of the brand Yank... I get my stuff from Summit usually... they don't seem to carry it... who deos?

P.S. Pete and I have been trading PM's... he's really been very helpful.

Pete's da' man and won't steer you wrong. In the RPM range you're looking at, any converter should be quite driveable.
