Default where to start

Sat. nite, going to eat,my 84,which had been running good, deceided to take a rest.Just quit. I coasted over to the side, won't start, battery, new, goes dead in about 5 min's. Call a tow,no easy task here in the Desert, wait an hour, get the car home in the garage. I have replaced everything in the past except the steering wheel, and it's really *&^$#$^& me off. I know it could be any one of 20 things,so maybe in about a week I'll be ready to tackle it. I'm leaning toward's the Coil ,which is new,MSD,but I have read a lot of bad reports on them.Try my old one first,if that's not it,I'll move to the fuel pump, and then to the alternator. Wish me luck,.....Keep you guys filled in...When you smile the whole world smiles with you....When you cry,you cry alone..

Your user name sounds familiar. Haven't you been through this before?
Fixing your car by shotgunning parts based on a hunch is not an economical way to do it, If your battery lasts 5 minutes, you must have a defective battery or some hellacious current being drawn from it.
Charge your battery back up before you start diagnosis.

Thanks for responding, and yea, similiar problem before, but different in that this time it just quit. Just had it out Wed.,and no problem. This time however like I said it just shut off. I have had several problems with this c-4,and I try to fix what's broke, but when one starts repairing one item, you sometimes get into the "mazze well" thing, and that's what I did. I bought a basket case, abbused 84'Vette,for $2000,and it needed everything. It was a busy thing for me,being retired, and a good project. I'm not complaining,I am old enough to accept responsibility for what I bought as my problem. It is all the "side" problems I have encountered with this car that I didn't bargin for, shipping, wrong parts being sent, crap replacement parts, rebuilt parts{yea right]! But I will fix it,it costs what it costs, and I will have it on the road as soon as the parts store opens tommorrow. Thanks for listening, all you guys have been great, and I read all the replies, and the vast majority on this site are positive people, which is what I try to be.

When it quit running would it crank but not start? Or not crank at all, or crank very slowly? if it died and wouldnt crank, start looking at the charging sys first. Charge up the bat, start it and check the alternator output. If it cranks good but wont start, you have to figure out what it doesnt have, usually spark or fuel.

Is that first AFTER battery check? (12.6 volts, no load) no voltage no fuel pressure. Bad alt, drains battery, stalls, no start, etc

Yes good pressure, both inject/carbs spraying well. Checked the pump first, had to replace that 2 months ago,got stuck in Yuma,AZ.,106' outside, but it started and I limped home.I'm thinking ALTERNATOR,the only part I have not replaced, just cleaned up,[previous owner in his infinate wisdom had CLEARED COATED the entire motor, and the SAWBLADES,even the shroud]! Go figure....anyway,will a BURNT,WASTED,Alternator stop it from starting? Battery is new and fully charged, and it cranks fast, but still no cigar!

EUREKA! I found it,a broken rotor of all things, just broke off at the contact area to the cap. That's what I meant earlier when I referred to cheap *&^%$^ plastic crap. Oh well, all's well that ends well,THANKS FOR THE HELP sometimes just knowing you guys are here, and know more about these cars and their problems than most mechanic's,is a good sense of security to have.

to check fuel press, you MUST put on a pressure gauge and key-on to run pump...a bad battery will show itself then too if you glance at the gauges....quick way cut ''the usual suspects'' in half.

YES , a bad alternator can send so much ripple to the ecm that a no-start can occur, altho its unusual...what OFTEN happens is that a bad alternator will ''spike'' the ecm with high voltage while the engine is running and murder the ecm (and the dizzy module, radio, and everything else, even your scanner)
