The 2.59 gears use a 35 or 36 tooth driven gear, depending in the tire size. The 3.45 gears take the 42 tooth driven gear. The VSS locates the driven gear, properly in relation to the drive gear. There are VSSs for 35 to 39 tooth driven gears and for 40 to 45 tooth driven gears. It is analogous to a two series diff case for a two series ring and pinion gears vs a three series case for a three series ring and pinion gears. The common cure is to change the VSS to match the larger driven gear. The right VSS for most years has been discontinued, and the VSS can be rotated to allow the bigger gear. Since there is no year given the VSS grapeknutz needs may be available, but I can't post what part number to look for without an application.

Pull the VSS out and reinstall it at 180*, and it's now offset the other way, and will allow larger speedo driven gears to be installed. (for larger rear ratios)
You'll have to pop the hold down clamp off and reinstall it the other way.
