I'm about to order a full carpet set for my 85 and was wondering what the "real world" difference is between the mass back and poly back. (other than $100)
If I'm not doing a factory correct restor and just want new carpet is the poly back that bad? I'm also putting dynamat extreme in that will dampen sound and reduce heat...
Where is the best/cheapest place to buy good carpet? Ecklers? One of the sponsors?
Don't know the answer to cheapest/best, sponsor or not, but if you're not doing a factory resto job, you're right, why bother spending big (or bigger) bucks?
It's a good question though as to whether the less expensive stuff (compared cheaper which implies cheaply made) will break down easily or wear out, fade, etc. That's a good one to have answered since all colors fade, get stained, abrasion, etc.
Let's see who responds altho this might even be a good question for the car care section???//
I bought the carpet for my 89 from Wilcox. The carpet fit very well. However, some trimming was involved. I got the mass back as I thought this had a thicker pad and would reduce road noise in the interior of the car. Just my thoughts on the above thread.
I bought a carpet set for my 85 from Mid America with the mass back. the side panel carpet pieces are poly back. There is a big difference. The carpet fit well with minor trimming. In my opinion I would go with the mass back.
How big a difference are we talking about though? Is it heat or noise? Is it really $100 worth? What is the difference?
You say fit is way better, but how bad is the poly fit? Is it absolutely horrible?
The mass backing is thicker so yes it would keep heat and the noise down more then the poly back. I don't know exact numbers thou. If your going to replace the carpet your best off to put some sort of sound/heat material under the carpet for added noise and heat reduction.
I got my carpet from Wilcox, which is Auto Custom Carpet, the same brand you get from: Ecklers, mid america, GM, ect. only about a $100 cheaper, you can get it through Wilcox than you can from ACC. I allso got my weatherstriping & door panels from them, & am very pleased. If a body shop wants to charge $100 to do the weather striping it's well spent money. With the garpetting I would buy the heat shielding, the carpet is a complete set so their is some glueing & slow work if you've never done it

Sorry for the stupid question. I keep reading poly or mass backing? When I pulled the rear carpet today I made an observation. Under the carpet there was padding. Is this padding what people call mass or poly backed? I am thinking this is correct. I just want to make sure before throwing it away.
