I have been reading several posts that talk about a "good tune".
With most of the engine parameters and controls not readily tweakable, and other then changing plugs, wires, and the usual cleaning of this and that ... can someone please define a "Good Tune"?
Seeing you have a 92, you want to see Alvin at PCMFORLESS.com. He is in fact GOD when it comes to tuning these cars. From stock to mild and all the way to wild there are people running his tunes with great success. I personally know someone with a stock 93 that got a tune from him and the car picked up a tenth as well as runs a lot nicer. Personally I have a heads and cam setup that with a bad tune ran high 13's and barely idled. On Alvin's first try I droped over a second and picked up over 10 mph in the quater mile. This totally amazed me especially since the car idled and ran better than when stock
Usually when I say it, I'm talking about a chip thats been custom programmed to optimize the engine's performance, i.e., specifically tailored to your combination. Not all tuners are the same quality.
Isn't locking the car in open loop bad for it? I'm assuming you'll using more 10% more gas, be running very rich and have plug fouling...
Not at all, so long as it is tuned properly, which is a lot more involved if you choose this option. A wide band O2 is pretty much a "must have" at that point.

Thanks!!

I'm sure you realize now by the previous responses that when we speak of a good tune, we are talking about changing those things that are not "readily tweakable." Of course for someone with the knowledge and the tools, it's fairly simple. And among the best, the results can be amazing. When I had my last engine tuned, it picked up 37 HP while on the dyno and driveability was returned to nearly as good as stock. Also mileage was as good as stock again. This was with a 350, 11.3 CR, fully ported heads and oversized vales, Hotcam, headers, etc., etc. I've recently installed a 388 and I'm really looking forward to taking it back to the guru who did it before. The car is running very strong already and I know it'll be even better when he works his magic again.

The majority of the cars this was done to were almost 100% for the race track only.
How it was discovered was that the first tuner did it. Something went wrong, brought to a second tuner who then called a third tuner who verified that the first tuner did it, since he had also worked on cars done by tuner one and discovered the same thing.
