I have an opertunity to purchase a modified engine that was in an 86 corvette for a very short time. It is complete with all sensors, throttle body, everything just as it was pulled out of the 86. Will it work in my 89? Could I be so lucky as to only need a new chip for my computer? I know that there were a lot of differences in the 89 parts compared to the 86. Buy would everything just plug in and work? I am sure I would not be that lucky. I don't have much time to decide if I want this engine. Please give me your thoughts.
The only thing I can think of that's significantly different is the cold start injector programming in the PROM.
In 89, GM went away from the 9th (Cold Start Injector) and went with the cold startup mixture programmed in the PROM.
Not a problem though. Simply disable the cold start injector on your 86 and have your PROM re-burned to give the richer startup fuel. Alvin at PCMFORLESS, who is a Forum sponsor, can do it for you.
If you 86 is an early model - iron heads, then you may need Alvin to tweak the PROM to account for that too. Email him and he'll tell you all that's needed.
I think it should be pretty much plug and play...before you go tearing harnasses out just look it over. There are only a couple on the block, my bet is everything will hook right up. (Only exception being possible the IAC valve under the TB and the MAF sensor (if included) because I believe yours is MAP, in which case just keep yours and continue with the plug and play)
