Default 84 starts and stalls need help

Hey Guys I have an 84 with crossfire yesterday it started sputtering above idel, but then it went away today it was running then just died and won't start and stay running. It will only start when I use starting fluid so I guessing it's a fuel problem took the breather off to see if there was a easy to get to filter but nope. My thoughts are fuel filter or pump were should I go from here?????????

Look down the throttle body and have some crank it, do you see a pretty spray of fuel from both injectors (watch out in case it backfires thru intake)? There is a small vacuum line on the back of the throttlebody on the driver side that may have gotten disconnected. Reason I mention this particular vacuum line is because if the car ever backfires (which them cross-fires do on rare occasssion, it will always blow this little vacuum line off. If I remeber correctly it is about 3-4 inches long and is dog-leg shaped. I am thinking that the fuel filter looks like a silver coke can but a little smaller, located ... hummm under the drivers door? It would not hurt to change it no matter what.

check your fuel presure, should be between 9-13 psi. fuel filter is in the same location as the TPI cars. Pass side close to the starter. AIf you determine that your fuel pump is bad replace it with a 85 TPI pump instead of the 84 unit

One system at a time. Don't go off like a fart in a skillet. It takes air, fuel, spark and compression, all in the proper amount, and at the right time. Based in the description of the problem, you have ignition. The symptoms bring the fuel supply into question. That is a good place to start looking for the deficiency. With an organized systematic trouble shooting plan, you can detect, test, and replace ONLY the defective part(s).

RACE ON!!!

Holy Cow! Lot of advice in so few responses..

This obviously a fuel problem. How about troubleshooting this the easy way rather than attempting "dangerous" troubleshooting or replacing unnecssary parts, that may not even need replacement.
I would start with this..
first turn the key on but NOT to the start position, do you hear the fuel pump turn on? Yes or No? If no then check the fuel pump fuse?relay? Power to the pump if the fuse is ok? Then go from there with troubleshooting and not going randomly replacing parts.

Default fuel pump relay

I tried to listen for fuel pump today but didn't really hear anything waiting for a manual to come in mail so have no clue were the relay and fuse are, pls advise. Also if the car would run while pumping the gas I figured the pump was working, my hopes are the filter is clogged but after reading some other threads my fear has grown.

Fuel pump relay is located just below to the right of the wiper motor. There is a electrical plug that connects to it. On mine it has come loose before. When you turn the key on the fuel pump noise is very noticeable. Has it been a while since the filter has been replaced? If so then as part of routine maintenance go ahead an change it.

Ok guys very uncharacteristic for my luck but I changed the fuel filter today and started the car started right up. I immediately thought hmmm probably because the ignition is cool let it warm up and watch it die................well I let it run for some time no issues....still paranoid that my problem was still there I took it for a spin drove fine the only bummer was the pretty red tail fox that I would see sometimes while running was dead in the middle of the road....the vette ran fine. Hard for me to believe it was just my filter but so far so good....thanks all who helped
