Default chip question

I am installing Hedman headers, high flow cat and Corsa exhaust this weekend. Will it be necessary to purchase a performance chip now? My 85 will be basically stock except for the exhaust. Any recommendations on where to buy a chip if I need it?

You won't need one until you get into heavier mods like cam and injectors. Then get a custom chip, aftermarket ones suck

Drez, let us know what difference the new exhaust set up makes. I have a stock 85 and have been really wondering about installing headers and HF exhaust. Would be very interested to read your feedback. Also interested in how difficult you feel installing the headers is. I've heard it's a PITA on L98's. Of course, I'm not very mechanical, and have hands the size of hams, so just about any work under the hood of a vette is a pain for me.

A re-programmed chip is not necessary for the exhaust modifications, but you'd likely see a performance improvement by going that route. c4 4 me is correct - a custom chip is the way to go.

You might, however, need a heated O2 sensor in order to go into closed loop - something to verify once the job is done.

Everyone is correct so far. You should't need a tuned chip with just the exhaust mods. And you will probably need a heated O2 sensor to stay in closed loop more. The headers don't get/stay as hot as the stock exhaust manifolds and you will probably see open loop (where the O2 sensor does not help control A/F ratio). If you decide to get a heated O2 sensor and have questions on how to install...looking for a 12v source, do a search in C4 Tech/Perf for heated O2 sensor and you should yeild good results.

I haven't seen the headers you are asking about, but a factor is where the bung is located. If it is up close to the cylinder head on #8 primary (similar to stock)you probably won't need a heated 02. If it is located on the collector you will need a heated 02, and in that location I have found it to change the BL's (tune). If that is what you do I would recommend putting a scan on it to know for sure.
