Does anyone out there have true duals on their L98. If so, I would like to know if they are worth it and what kind of mufflers I should use with them. I don't want it too loud, but a little more aggressive than stock.
I'm running true duals from the stock headers back to 2 Dynomax mufflers with a balance pipe behind the 4+3 OD fluid pan. It sounds MEAN from outside and VERY quiet inside! I had a local muffler shop fabricate the entire system and they did a good job. If you also have yours custom fabricated, be sure to get all mandrel bends and get them to put in a balance pipe (it cost $25 more in my case). If nothing else, I'm told that that balance pipe eliminates alot of resonance.
I couldn't believe how much less this cost me than say a Borla catback!
I think that this will be the best exhaust mod i could do b/c i am going to put a super ram and a 219 cam in it soon. Plus, since i have some resources, i'm going to enlarge a stock throttle body to 52mm (not the one on the car, but one that i dug up just in case). I was thinking with these mods i would need the freer flowing exhaust. What do you all think?
If you do it, go with a set of muffler elims. It'll be louder and more resonance with a set of mufflers than the elims. Definatly get an h-pipe. It WILL fit in there under the forward part of the transmission. Get the h-pipe, get the h-pipe, get the h-pipe. Dont fool with a balance tube out back. This was one of the 1st mods I did. (true duals w h-pipe) Heres a pic of the before and after dyno chart. http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/red9...res/Img001.jpg
I have removed Cats, installed stainless with h-pipe and a couple of Dynomax cans. IT IS LOUD!!!!! The resonance around 2500rpm drowns out the radio and all conversation. Cruising the parking lots leaves a trail of car alarm chirps. When cops are around, I try to slip in the clutch or be the last to leave a stop light. Do I like it, YES!!!
On the road course my 12 year old slugger pulls out of the corners a ton. Sounds like a race car and is by far the fastest car per dollar out there.
I would like to have a quieter option at times tho...
I made a 2.5" dual exhaust with full length headers and X-Pipe that uses the stock mounting points. It is louder than stock but I have no problems with resonance.
Will gutting all the cats, pre and main, without mufflers be way too loud? How much resonance? Will it be a deap growl like a muffler-less Harley? My new engine will have a hot cam in it with some effect to the idle, but not much. I was told the mufflers help to keep cold air from reaching the heads and cracking them . Is that true?
