It might sound like a dumb question, but someone told me they don't.
The reason being, I was looking to buy a 93 vette, and it had a ticking sound. The owner said he "thought" it was a bearing on the alternator. I didn't really know if the vette had an alternator or not, so I assumed that is what it was (It looked like an alternator.... a belt w/ 3 [i think] pulleys). A person told me that they don't even have alternators, and that the ticking was the omnispark. Help please?
But do you think the clicking is probly to Opti spark?
I know that they ALL go out , but is the ticking (around the alternator area) probly the opti spark? The guy who is selling the car says it is a "Bearing on the alternator". I was always under the impression that alternators just died... period. More help?
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (Andy1983)
I have the same sound! I think it is actually coming from the thing right above the alternator. My 91 charges good and strong. I think it is part of the emmission system?? Not sure though??
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (KNCRSR5R)
How loud is it? Generally a soft ticking sound is usually just a fuel injector that's slightly louder than the others. Nothing to be concerned with at all.
A bad bearing will sound more like rattling or howling sound. If it's a thump-thump-thump type of thing, usually that means the serpentine belt is about to go.
And yes, '93 vettes do have alternators, otherwise the battery wouldn't stay charged. ;)
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (Andy1983)
Ticking could be a number of things on these cars. First, the opti doesn't tick so I'd rule that out. Trust me you'll know when that thing is dying :D Most likely it is noisy injectors or possibly exhaust leak. Could also be lifters, alternator bearing, rocker arms, bent pushrods, maybe a few other possibilities. The last couple seem to be much less common but still can happen.
I have a loud ticking too, and I believe it's injectors. You can get one of those automotive stethoscopes and place it on various components to trace the source. Or most mechanics will do this for free.
I know what the injectors sound like! Its not a rod or a bearing in the engine. Its in the thing right above the alternator. ITS NOT THE ALTERNATOR BEARING. I KNOW THIS MUCH FOR SURE! :yesnod:
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (KNCRSR5R)
And another thing........a 91 has no OPTI......so its not that either!
Again......whats the thing right above the alternator??? THATS WHATS TICKING IN MY 91!
My compressor is on the passenger side. nope cold as ICE. It is coming from the thing right above the altenator on my 91. Anyone with this engine know what I am talking about. I think it is part of the smog equip?
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (KNCRSR5R)
You can buy an air pump elimenator bracket from breathless performance to get rid of it (I personally think they are too expensive) or you could contact eklers or MAD to order a another one. I don't know if bearing go bad in it or not.
Re: Do 1993 Corvettes have Alternators? (Andy1983)
You can always take the belt off manually spin the suspicious accys. They should spin smoothly. Actually its probably a better idea to take it to a mechanic or vett person you trust to check it out. :hat
