Questions have been asked as to what kind of paint was used on my 89Vette engine. Here is a photo of the Rustoleum Hi Temp paint:
Both cars are the same paint. The Rustoleum part number is 7716 and the color is "heat resistant silver". This is available at Home Depot and Lowes in the aerosol paint section and costs about #3.50 per can. A word of caution to those who are considering using this paint on their engine...you must use a primer on the bare casting for the paint to properly stick. Agent86 recommends a zinc chromate primer (I do not know a brand name to recommend). I used a PPG product called DX501 and this is a metal primer.
My car engine was painted during the winter of 2003 and I put about 2000 miles per year on the car. Sorry I do not have a "before paint" picture of the engine.
I just got to looking at your motor and I noticed that my valve covers are not center bolt. Mine are on the ends. Was this changed during the 1986 production year? I know some 86's came with aluminum heads but mine have the crappy heads. Do I need to look at the ID marks to find out if I have non 1986 heads???
My car is a 1989 model and I am sure many changes were made in the three years between our cars. I suggest you send a note to Agent86 for he is very knowledgeable on Vetts.
When I did my motor last year, I went the powder coat route for durability. It wasn't really that expensive as the more parts I brought, the cheaper it got. The only two parts I couldn't powder coat were the AC compressor, and the smog pump. Those two parts I took to my local paint guy, and he matched them perfect. Everything else, including the intake was powder coated. For the exhaust manifold covers, I used the high temp paint mentioned above, and it worked great.
Tried to post a picture, no luck, for a view of my engine check out the link to the left, there are two pictures.
