And they're plenty wide. The important point is roadworthiness, and the FSWO's are excellent. And in a downpour you wouldn't believe how good these tires are.

I'm OK with my Firehawks, but I wish they would make them a bit wider. They seem too narrow even at the 285 size. My old SZ50's are as wide or wider at 275.
I'll second that. I have SZ50s in 285/40/17 on the front of my car and normally I run 315s in the back, but on track days I throw MT drag radials on. The drag radials are 275/40/17, but are at least an inch wider than my 285 Firehawks That being said, I love the tires, but just wish they were a tad wider.
As Hot Rod pointed out, they are still plenty wide, but if you like the looks of a wide tire you'd probably prefer another tire.
I bought Sumitomos from Tire Rack and I love them and about one third the price of F1s
I wouldnt put firestone on my car if they were free
I had to go round and round with them over truck tires on my Jeep Grand Waggoneer The same ones that were on Explorer
I was limited to just a few manufacturers bc of the fat meat on the ZR1
What I've found with the FSWO's is not so great traction at the strip. But, if you drop the pressure to 25 it's not that bad. Don't try to launch at regular pressure.
I have had a set of Yokohama Avids on my 86 coupe for over a year and over 20000 miles. Most of my driving is interstate, with some county blacktops on each end of my daily trips. They are quiet, smooth, and very stable at speed. They track straight and true, and they behave very linearly when I corner or make quick maneuvers. Very little understeer unless you really push them hard.
Just Put Kuhmo On My 91 And I Love Them. Great In The Rain Too. $104 A Tire From The Rack . Best Tire For The Money ,and A Good Looking Tread Pattern Also.
i have toyo proxes t1r tires,295 rear/275 front. well over 4,000. miles and they handle and wear great, good rain tire and NO noise from the tread design.
ive always bought the "bang for the buck" tires as I burn them up quick anyway...Had good luck with Falkens, Sumitomos, etc. Stick pretty well, cheap, no road noise problems. Thats just me though.
I dont want to feel guilty after a burnout on a set of rears that cost $200 per tire
cuisinart, any particular models of those tires you'd recommend, ie Sumitomo HTR, HTR Z . . . . ? I'm leaning toward Kumho, but if there are others that are even cheaper (and are the same/better quality), then i could check out the details.

Recommendation; if you buy them, buy one size bigger (width) than what you ride calls for.
I agree. I just put 285 on all 4's. They handle and ride very well but I am dissapointed with the width. It just a look thing. They also have large bead near the rim lip. I understand its to protect your rim from rubbing against a curb. I don't much care for the looks of that either.

there are other tires that have this feature in addition to the FSWO's. some folks don't like it, i'm just used to it because my previous set of (different) tires had the same feature, so it doesn't even enter into a visual issue with me.
tell ya what though --- if and when you ever rub a curb, you'll be very appreciative because your wheels won't suffer an expensive fix like you would have otherwise had to deal with
