Default OBD I Scanners/Tools?

Help! I'm looking for a good tool that I can plug into my 1990 Corvette.

There are a lot of inexpensive OBD II tools out there... like in the $100 range. But as soon as I try to find something cool for the older OBD I spec... the price rockets up to the $300 range!

Any advice, tips, recommendations? My 1990 'Vette wants to talk to me!

I use the FREE Craig Moates' ECM 852 program. It works well with my 1990 and the price was right!

You can download it at:

http://moates.net/gmecm/software.html

You will also need a laptop and an interface to connect to the OBD I connector under the dash. Moates' web site has links for the interface.

iagree: I also have a '90...

You can also use tunerpro R/T but I have used Moates as well with equal success.

Got my serial interface cable through a link off here & the USB was for sale here on the forum last year.

Have fun!

You might be in luck! Look right here:

SO how well does the ALDL portion of Tunerpro work?

Mark (creator of TunerPro) said I would be lucky to get the Scanner portion of it to work.. I do know a newer version of the Scanner is coming from Mark

I am slowly working on switching over to TunerPro, but after using TunerCat for so long a lot of the definition names are different.

I don't use the rgular Tunerpro but RT version works fine, a little tweak in systems in the laptop for com port and speed. What I do like better than datamaster aside from using an emmulater, is I can record longer sessions.

ALDL is only in TunerPRO RT.. I tried it a couple weeks ago.. in a 40 min drive I got just over 2000 frames.. with my EASE Scan tool I get closer to 18000 frames int he same amount of time.

What steps are you taking when you first connect TunerPro RT to get it to datalog?

I have the same connection issues with my 89 MAF setup but the Moates ECM 852 Pgm won't work on my laptop with XP. I can't get my EASE software to work even after getting it repaired (??) and I can't get Tuner Pro RT to hook either. Craig talked me thru it one day and it hooked up twice - then never again! The only thing I can get to work is Winaldl which will hook some of the time but it's a 160 baud snail with limited capability but I can get some sense of my BLM conditions and knock counts. Tuner Pro RT and Craigs Flash and Burn setup works flawlessly for reading and burning my flash chips but without good datalogs you can only go so far.

Hi Jeff,

Yes I finally got it back together. but had to get into chip tuning to get through emissions (the roller in IL) which I managed to pass with flying colors. Now its tuning for driveability as I have issues with the AE tip in area but it's coming around after 30+ burns. I did have the adapter repaired in March and it seemed to work for about 5 or 6 scans then it stopped hooking up and just goes on and off. I even did a special scan recording for EASE but they found nothing. Maybe it's the adapter again but being out of work for 10 months so far has made me cheap. When I can, I think that the wide band route is the way I'm going to go to really get dialed in.

Gents: I am very new to tuning and have a lot to learn. I have spent considerable $$$ on the free stuff and then had to buy the cables ...that never work. I purchased a used Diacom setup and this was a DOS based system and was a POS. I just purcased Turbo-Link and I can use this as it is user friendly. If you want to see something that is impressive, look at Turbo-Link. This costs $279 and is compatable with windows. Here is the link:
http://www.turbo-link.com/ I know the web says $299, but the cost is $279????
Download the demo. I have a 89 and a friend has a 88. Vetts OBDI systems work well with this package. Hope this is helpful.
