Default McLeod master with stock clutch

I am planning to upgrade to a street twin next year on my 90 vette. I understand that this clutch requires your clutch master cylinder with it larger bore and greater travel. My current master cylinder has failed, so I would like to replace it with the McLeod unit in anticipation of going with the street twin later.

Does anyone see any problem with running the McLeod master cylinder travel with the stock clutch?

PS. From McLeod's web site...

I don't see why it would cause a problem. You use the stock slave with the McLeod kit, so I know the slave will take it. I don't see why pulling the stocker back another few thousandths would matter.

I like my McLeod twin, it's a killer clutch for sure.

I did not know how much additional travel.

If it is only a few thousandths, I'd agree...not be a problem.

I don't know the exact amount either. There is a modified pivot ball out there sold by Exotic Muscle that moves the pivot point towards the rear of the car .050, that allows you to use the stock hydraulics with the McLeod kit. Since moving the pivot ball .050 equates to the same amount of increased movement as using the McLeod master, you could do the math on the length of the clutch fork and see what kind of added movement you are actually achieving. Off the top of my head, .065 sounds about right, but I don't know for sure.

Either way, I would almost guarantee that it is less than .1. Even if it was as much as .25 I don't see why it would cause a problem.

If you are super concerned about it, you could replace your master with a stocker and use the modified pivot ball from Exotic Muscle when you install the twin. The pivot ball is cheap, less than $50 if memory serves.

I don't think McLeod sells the kit without the master, so you could just throw the McLeod master in your tool box next to the stock pivot ball. If your new stock master ever dies, you'd have everything you needed to go to the McLeod set-up.

I went through the master cylinder Hell with McLeod that the little note you have there is referring to. Unless McLeod has found another supplier (someone other than CNC) I would probably recommend using the stock stuff with the modified pivot ball. Like I said, if the stocker ever fails, you'll have everything you need to swap over. If you do get the McLeod master, pop it apart and make sure it has the right piston in it, the spring is facing the right way, the cup seal isn't torn, and that the piston seal is intact.

Good luck, and report back on how you like the twin. Your interpretation of the added noise level would be great!
