Trans Shifting Problems
The trans in my 85 will not shift out of second at full throttle. I recently bought this car with a bad motor and changed the entire driveline except for the trans When driving the car in a moderate fashion the trans seems to work fine. I took the car to the track last night for the first time and found out that it stays in second gear under full throttle. ( thank God for the rev limiter) I had to lift, place the shifter in neutral and back into gear to get 3rd gear. The 1-2 shift works as it should. The last owner of the car had a performance rebuild on this trans. It is supposed to be capable to handle 500/600 HP. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Any shifting problem that does not involve the trans slipping is typically tv related or governor related. Before ripping into the trans, adjust the tv valve as per the service manual. Next I would put a pressure guage on it. Stock pressures ar about 65psi at idle and approx 150 or so at wide open throttle(full tv extension) Larger boost valves will cause higher max pressures, shift kit pressure regulator springs will give higher idle pressures. 80-215 psi could occur in these cases. If this checks good, remove and service the governor. A sticky valve or chewed gear could cause a no shift.

Thanks Pete. I'll check those things & let you know how it works out. I have not ruled out a slipping trans, but the car does not seem to quit pulling right to the rev limiter.
