Hi everyone,
I have an 88 coupe that I am starting for the first time in a couple of months. the engine turns over great, and idles fine. However, the cars stalls as if you turned the key off when I step on the brake pedal. Im sure the battery needs to be replaced, but I am getting 14.2 volts at idle (according to my dvom, not dash). Its almost like I am shorting out the ignition when I step on the brake. An ideas?????

..i have an 88 also..since the symptom is the dying of the engine when the brake is pressed, do this; disconnect the brake vacuum line from the booster and plug it..then do what you do and see if the car stalls...then report back...
I quite sure it is not a vacuum problem. the car dies as if you turned the ignition off. No spudering or hard brake pedal. seems like its an electrical problem. Is there anything in common between the brake light switch and the igntion? ground points????

...i have seen cars that as soon as they get a sizable vac leak, they die....i would try it anyway..what do you have to loose?.....at any rate, no connection as i understand between the brake light switch and the ignition......

The only way to be sure that the vacuum isn't involved is to perform the easy test recommended by GeorgeL98. A sudden loss of vacuum via a leaky brake booster can cause the engine to die.

....reccomended by whom?...i thought i said that! (see post #2)
Da Mail Man is on the right track with this. Try what he suggested. A large vacuum leak will stop the engine and it seems that is what is happening when the brake is pressed. See what happens and get back.
My Tahoe would almost die when I applied the brakes. I had a bad brake booster. When I had the booster replaced, it ran fine again. I'd be willing to bet that is your problem.
