Engine Compartment Noise
I just noticed that there is a wining noise coming from the engine compartment. It almost sounds like the noise a blower makes. Neither of the fans are on while this is happening. Should I check the AIR unit or the AC compressor? Any other ideas of where to begin?
Thanks,
Bill

Does the car make this noise all the time? Only when hot? Right when you start the car? only when you touch the gas? etc.

I would check the AIR unit. Take the belt off and spin the pulley.

You can start with a length of heater hose up to your ear, while you play the other end around the usual suspects, the A.I.R. pump, alternator, power steering pump, water pump, A/C compressor, etc.

It does it both cold and hot.
I will start it and try to listen to each section.

I had the same problem. This was my path to enlightenment:
Then disconnect the brake booster hose and go for a drive. Braking will be difficult. Be careful. If the noise is the same, that's not your problem.
Then remove the serp belt and go for a short drive. If the noise is the same, that's not your problem.
If removing the belt stops the problem, disconnect the hose from the AIR pump and go for a drive. If the noise is the same, that's not your problem.
For me, it was the AIR system. I ripped it all out and am experiencing AWESOME results. No codes, better mileage, smoother ride, etc.
