The key to it, is after removing the button for the OD on the shifter...which I actually don't think was one 85's.

You have to take the t-bar in the shifter and unscrew it from the shifter. You also have to remove the little metal key piece that sits there.

Then the shifter unscrews.

At least this is what I remember from my removal/installation of a shift boot on my 86.

Use a screwdriver to lift the OD button off. Use pliers to pull the wedge up, then unscrew the ****.

The 4+3 shifter **** on my 85 was not that hard to get off. Pop the button off and look down in - there is a C-clip that you have to take out and the **** will pull off. It does not screw on.
It was harder to put it back on - the C-clip was a pain.

Thanks for the info, what i reall want to do is remove the shifter (which is in real bad shape) relocate the over drive button on the console somewhere and use a generic shifter in place. has anyone done this before?

Oh boy you are in for a really crappy treat then. The shifter is mounted to the left side of the fiberglass tranny tunnel. It is sort of a unique situation that will take some custom work to accomplish this.

Ahhh ok! I haven't heard of anyone doing it, but as far as I know it is just a normal thread pattern once you pull the switch part out of it.

This is something that I want to do as well. Shouldn't you be able to just run the wire from the switch solenod to some other place of your choosing and just leave the stock shifter in place with an OD switch that doesn't work?
