Default Door Switch Question

Has anyone else experienced poor durability with their door ajar switch?
I bought my 93 in June with a bad driver's door switch which I replaced with a new AC Delco part. Now the switch appears to be acting up. The interior and door ajar lights flicker while driving, especially when the road is bumpy.

I would greatly appeciate any info on this problem.

Thanks!

Joe

I had a very similar problem with a 93 I had. I thought I had a bad door switch because it did what you describe plus it left the lights on sometimes and would drain the battery. I also thought a bad switch but it ended up being a bad relay that is located under the passenger side dash. Take the lower panel out and when you open and close the door switch you should here a relay click, mine would not always work. Replaced and all was well.

Default Door ajar switch

The door ajar switches are adjustable - or so it says in many threads. Just screw them in or out. Fortunately I've never had to tweak mine.
Hope this helps.

Thanks! I do have one question thought....is there a seperate relay for each side? I cycled the switch on the pass side with my finger and the interior/door ajar lights came on in unison. When I cycled the driver side switch in the same manor, the lights would sometimes not go out.

Thanks again!

Flickering lights over bumps usually means the door or the switch needs to be adjusted.

A while back (1-2 years) people were getting new switches that went bad quickly, but haven't seen anything lately about that.

This relay can cause the flickering-lights-over-bumps problem?

If so I need to check into this - even after fiddling with door and switch adjustments numerous times, I still get a flicker once in a while.

I bought 2 new switches from one of the mail order Corvette house's, 1 was bad when I installed it. The interior lights would not go out at all. The adjustment is just tension on the inner plunger, no threads. Once it acts up you can pull it out some more but it just goes right back in a short time later.

I done some additional trouble shooting and found some strange phenomenom. When my door ajar is acting up and is illuminating, I can press the door switch and door ajar light changes intensity. It dims a little when I press the switch simulating the door closed. I do hear some clicking from the center dash area when the ajar light cycles. Does this still sound like the relay?

Thanks.

I had the same problems with mine. I was ready to replace mine until I found this site.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/zrjuan/doorajar.html

I tried it and it works I have not had a problem since . This site also has a step by step directions (with pictures) on how to replace the delrin bushings for the headlights.

Good Luck

Hope it helps.

They are adjustable. You can grab that little post in the center of the door switch with your fingernails and just pull it out a little bit, then gently close the door. It'll push it back in to the right position. I had problems with one of my switches once and doing that fixed it.

I had a similar problem with my car shortly after I bought it. The lights would sometimes flicker while driving. The previous owner had stuck a small pile of electrical tape on the door jam where the switch contacts to make it work, and the tape had moved. I was getting ready to replace the switch, when I discovered that the screws that hold the latch in the door were loose. After tightening the screws, the tape is gone and I have had no further problems.
