Just installed a B&M short shifter into my 96 LT4...still trying to decide if I like it or not, but was wondering what the differences were between the B&M and the Hurst short shifters???
Are they supposed to have the same percentage of throw reduction?
I had the B&M. At first it was cool and I loved it. then the rattling really started to make me AFter I drove a stock car after 3 years with the B&M, I actually missed the little longer and smoother throws. if I would pick again, it would be the Hurst ll the way. SInce then however I had a new ZF trans R&R by Bill at zfdoc and he makes his own short shifter. I couldn't be happier and i'm guessing its very similar to the Hurst in feel and throw.
I have the B&M. It's quiet, doesn't rattle, and the throw is super short; but the shifter effort is atleast 200% that of the stocker. I will probably go Hurst if I ever do it again.
What sold me on the Hurst 4 years ago, was the side-by-side comparison. The Hurst was much better constructed and beefier. To be honest, it was the best of all the mods I did to my Vette to date. The Hurst ball just reminds me of my first Hurst I had on my 57 Chevy. I know, old school.
I bought the B&M for my car about 4 years ago. It had a lot of friction especially between the 1/2 and 3/4 gates and made some buzzing noises. After my 18 year old son started driving the car (he won the 92-96 C4 class in the "Vette Mag East Coast Show and Go" at E-town in '05 and runner up in '06) the shifter is now quite easy to shift albeit with some "good" notchiness and has very little friction between the aforementioned gates. It also doesnt seem to buzz as much. I wish he'd loosen up the B&M in my 02 C5-Z06 but he had to go to college (left the C4 behind for me to play with again).
there's more to it than that. hurst will take a little more "effort" than stock, and also the feel at each gate is significantly more positive than the stock shifter. its head & shoulders better than the suck-azz stock setup.

Yes, the feel is notchier and positive but you should try the B&M. After you feel the B&M the hurst just feels like its a short shifter.
