Default Question about weatherstripping

I bought new weatherstripping while at Funfest. I pulled off the peice that goes around the windshield and put the new peice on without glueing it yet. That went pretty well, hard job but no surprises, I started the peice that goes around the back of the side windows and across the back of the roof. This peice was in worse shape and is harder to get off. I cleaned off 99% of the old glue, in some places the paint on the stainless steel runners came off with the glue and old stripping, nothing visible once the new stripping is in place.

My question is how much weatherstripping glue to use, a thin bead under the whole peice? Since I have the peice in place I assume I can lift it up put a thin bead under it and push it back in place, correct? Since the paint that came off was on the stainless and under the stripping I don't have to worry about it right? Anything else I should know?

TIA

When I did my windshield header I ran a continuous bead about a 1/8" thick all the entire length and circled the retainer screws as well. It's been there a couple of years now with zero problems.

Have you tried contacting one of the rubber vendors here? If it's any help (and I've never done any weather stripping), I watched the glass guy do my windshield. I'm pretty certain they used a bead all the way around the winshield under the seal.

Make sure you touch this up before you put the new weather stripping in place!

Why if it's stainless and under the weatherstripping?

Guy's I'm not doing the seal between the windshield and the car, I'm doing all the weatherstripping that touches the roof. The front piece that also goes down the front of the door windows, the rear peice that goes down the rear of the door windows and the side pieces that the window winds up an touches.....

Yep... that's what I'm talking about also. Just run a continuous bead of 3M sealer from one end to the other and then put the stripping in place. Make sure there is no sealer where it is not supposed to be and then button her up and let it dry a day or so. Things will be thight at first until the new seal gets familar with it's ajoining parts (roof and door windows) so be careful bolting and closing.

That is how I did it, others may have other procedures/processes.

I just did the front piece and I didn't use any glue to hold the W/S in place. I did remove the retainers and used the 3M bedding and glazing compound under them, but nothing between the W/S and the retainer. No leaks so far..................

Got it done, ended up that I was given a link that said to use sealant only in the areas between channels and at the ends. Seems to be on pretty good, man is every thing tight though, the roff was a two person job to get the screws started. Windows lined up pretty well and I don't see any big gaps for water to get in. Waiting on the rain to see what leaks. Thanks for the help!

why wait on the rain? just have someone spray your car with a garden hose and you sit inside and inspect----I have to also replace the SAME piece around the windshield---because the doors will not shut easy at all--I bought a crappy piece quite awhile back from some midamerica affiliate company in GA, unless I put the windows Down and then the doors will shut perfectly but I do Have a big problem with rain leaking in because of this, open gaps and what not...
