Default Clutch Problem

Hey guys I could use some help. My brother-in-law has a 96 vert with 90,000 miles and is a six speed. He drove the car the other day no problems no slipage or anything out of the ordinary. Sunday he goes out to take it for a spin and there is absolutely no resistance when he pushes the clutch pedal down. The car will start but not go into gear. Since this car is way out of my league I thought I would let you guys give me some ideas to look for. Thanks for your help in advance!

First item to check is the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. After that check the slave cylinder. Then bleed the system.

I do not know much about the C4 where would those cylinders be found so he can check the level? Would you see fluid on the ground if there was a leak? He did mention there was noting underneath it on the pavement.

Thanks for your help.

Too easy to check the fluid. If there is fluid in the resivour then that is not the problem if there is no fluid then you found it! These master cyclindars are known to leak from the inside of the car so there would not be any fluid under the car but rather by the pedals. If there is fluid the next step would be checking to see if there is any kink in the lines if no then jack the car up and look at the tranny, there will be a cyclindar attached to it that is the slave. Make sure the rod is inside the cyclindar and not bent either. Other than that it could be a bad slave or a bad master. I am leaning tward a bad master, if there is no pedal what so ever then it points closer to a bad master. Check fluid first though

BTW, my master just got replaced because the rod inside the master bent and got stuck which left me with no pedal. ALSO check the color of the fluid, if its black then the seals are shot inside the master.

The master is under the ECM; remove two screws, slide and lift, set aside. Master cap is black and is going to be on very tight, you might have to use slip joint pliers but hold the milk white plastic part to keep from turning and splitting.

The slave is under the car, attached to the bell housing. Its black.

The clutch fluid is under the computer or black box at the left rear of the engine compartment. Takes 3 nuts to loosen it and set aside gently. The fluid cap says clutch. Add a little and put the black cup back in and check the level. Do this until it is at the full line on the side of the resevoir. Some body else will have to tell you the bleeding procedure.
