You will have to learn to tune the DFI it is capable of doing about anything you can think of. It can control nitrous turn your fans on and off and everything is adjustable. The GM computer can make up to 500 hp with the right chip in it but if you want to make serious power then you have no choice but go with one of the adjustable ECU"S like the DFI. Whether you can tune it depends on your expertise of tuning engines. Bottom line is this is the only way to fly :D
I used the Accel DFI engine management system for a little over 2 years when I had a Superrammed 383 in my car. I installed and tuned it myself, evenually running 11.67 and making 450hp/480tq with it.
The system has a utility program which will generate a decent, but rich, Base Fuel Map that will get the engine started and will safely run the car. 90% of the tuning is in the Base Fuel Map, with a little tuning of the Ignition Map. The rest of the maps, like the Acceleration maps, start enrichment etc, are good for most applications as is. You may end up tweaking them later, but you can get it real close by just focusing on the Base Fuel Map.
My advice is to wither take it to an EMIC to have them tune it initially if you are uncomfortable tuning it yourself, or take a slow, methodical, incremental approach to tuning it yourself. Tuning at the track is a good idea if it's an option. I prefer tuning it on the dyno myself, but alot of people prefer the strip. My opinion is that there are too many variables at the track, including the human variable...
I wouldn't be afraid of it. The Accel DFI system is probably the most popular aftermarket system out there, there are plenty of guys who can help you, and Accel's doucmentation isn't too bad, at least compared to the rest.
I switched over to the SpeedPro (F.A.S.T.) system for my SBC 427 cause I wanted a sequential unit with wide-band 02, and got tired of waiting for DFI 7.0/Calmap 2000 to come out. I hear DFI 7 is out, but don't know anyone who has it yet. It's looked like it would be a nice system from the beta's that were out. I sold my DFI 6.32 system complete for $500, and have seen other systems similarly priced all over the car forums.
If you don't want to hack into your car's wiring, you'll require a harness to adapt the DFI to your car's ECM connector. Additionally, you'll need to hook up both ECMs to the harness. My harness is made by RES in arlington, texas. Unfortunely they are no longer in business and I don't know of other harness manufacturers but I'm sure an EMIC center will be able to locate a supplier for you.
