Hey guys, it's been awhile. I'm back with what could be an interesting point of discussion. I have the opportunity to pick up an '88 cheap with no motor. I have sitting on my garage floor a '74 four bolt 350. My thought is to combine the 2 into a fairly hot C4. The engine is very strong. My question for you guys is, has anyone ripped their computer system out for a pre computer engine with a 4 barrel, headers, etc.? Is any of the computer system necessary in an '88? I've never approached a project from this standpoint and would like to know what everyone thinks. I know my '92 has "computer" monitored systems beyond the engine controls and would guess it would be the same for an '88. By the way, here in NH the emission testing is only '96 and up so I'm not too worried about that. Pre '96 is visual inspection of what should be on the car, which is no big deal. Please weigh in with your thoughts.
It would be like doing a carb swap, (which is not very popular). Mine is currently carbed, but am collecting parts for the TPI swap, (boy it can be expensive...).
Search "carb" and you will find some information. Also thirdgen.org has a carb section and I believe a tech article regarding what you are planning. Leave the computer intact and you will use some of the sensors so water temp, etc. works.
Some of the things you will need are a fuel pressure regulator to bring the pressure down for the carb, a non-computer vac advance distributer, a short intake manifold to fit under the hood, (Wieand).
I see nothing wrong with it. It is your corvette! Sounds like an inexpensive, fun project.
I am one if the anti carb swap guys. I just can't see taking a car backward in technology. Your case is different. You are simply trying to utilize what you have. Good idea. The existing computer will do little more for you than to run the fan, assuming you install and hook up an ECT sensor in your existing engine. As stated you will need a fuel pressure regulator to knock the pressure down to the 5-7 psi the carb works with, a mechanical/vacuum advance distributor, and a switch or other means for locking up the torque converter if it is an automatic. Also, if it is an auto, you will have to buy the correct adapter for the TV cable to connect to. The 700R4 is VERY sensitive to the proper amount of cable movement at the right time. A cobbled up connection could easily cost you a transmission.

TPI is the wrong way to go if you are looking for high performance. If you want the car back original and with all the advantages of EFI, fine, but it won't make the car quicker. For performance, consider one of the systems the TPI guys up grade, to, like a Super Ram, Mini Ram, etc. With a stock TPI you'll end up spending a lot of money (as you commented) for no performance gain and possibly a loss.
