This can vary by ring and/or piston manufacturer too. Are you putting together a stocker? If so, it'd be especially good to know the year and engine type. There are variables here, especially if non-stock parts are involved.

Congrats to you for even asking. I've always been a STRONG believer that ring gap placement is something that's too often over-looked.

There are certain things I have never tried to commit to memory, like head bolt torque sequence and, yep, ring gap placement. Each time I put one together, I sit the manual in the lifter valley and play close attention to the diagram in the book.

I do remember, though, that the top compression ring gap is to be placed 90 degrees from the thurst surface on the cylinder wall.

The second right 90 degrees from the top ring.

The three piece oil ring set is another problem all together. Not sure how to explain how they're placed.

The thurst surface differs from one side of the engine to the other.

My advice is it's best to grab an inexpensive Chilton or Motors Manual from AutoZone, O'Reilly's, etc., to view the diagrams because I feel getting them right is very important, but is also difficult to explain in text format.

Jake

Are you using KB hypers or forged? If you're using the hypers, I trust you know how critical sufficient gap is for them, particularly on the top ring.

corvette kid, i have put many engines together in my life, so yes i know about the end gap clearance. what my question is, what is the placement of the gaps in the cylinder. i just cant remember and i cant find it in any of my books and the book that i used to have for that i had lent out many years ago and never got it back.

and thanks for the responce jake, i think i will just go over to my machine shop and ask them, i got a question about the rods for them also.

generic ring end positions (if you didn't get instructions with em)

looking down on piston--
hold piston so that front of vehicle is at 12:00 o'clock.
top ring gap at 3:00.
second ring gap at 9:00.
oil ring gaps at 8;00 and 11:00, NEVER aligned with each other.
oil ring spacer spring gap between 2:00 and 4:00
