My intermitent ECM problem appears to have become steady. Does anyone know of a source in So Cal for a replacement ECM for my 93? I'll even consider a used one at this point. This is my only car and I'm going to have to rent somthing come Monday morning if the Vette's not running.
Why are you so sure it is the ECM? What testing have you done?
I have a 93 and I would be a cool and let you use my ECM as a tester, but, you most likely don't live in Alabama...And I don't want to drive far either...
Also, what does the car do when it's when its bad?
Thanks for the thought but Los Angeles is quite a ways from Alabama!
The ECM saga is as follows.
Over the past few weeks, the security and sys lights have occasionally flashed on my 93. The service ASR light also comes on. It hasn't made a perceptable difference when it occured while already running. A couple of times I have had to wait a few min to get started. The codes I've pulled are
1. H41 & H54
4. H27
9. H72
If my car won't start, I can opened my hood, and smack the ECM with the heel/palm of my hand. The car starts and runs perfectly. I assumed this was pretty good evidence that my ECM is bad. As many of you know the ECMs are currently damn hard to find.
After reading many of the CF posts, I'm not sure if it's the ECM.
Does my smack of the ECM prove it's bad or am I just "rebooting" for lack of a better term.
I have the factory manuals but the H41 looks to require a special tool to troubleshoot
Yestarday morning the car won't start and the ECM smack doesn't help. I',m really hoping the smack is conclusive proof that the problem is the ECM.
Seems like the smack could be moving the wiring just enough to make contact either for the ECM or the PROM. I would take both or one then the other and try to start it up again.
I agree with the others that it is mostly a connection problem. I've had my share. Smacking, or to be techanically correct, administering a mechanical shock, can have no other effect as there are no moving parts in the ecm.
The connecters should be unpluged from the ecm and cleaned with a good cleaner such as those found a Radio shack. Then reassembeled with the above mentioned grease. Another possiability is a "Cold solder joint" or a soldered connection on the circuit board that has broken loose.
I purchased a rebuilt ecm at Auto Zone at a very reasonable price, if the need should continue.
