Default Squishy Clutch Pedal

Surely someone here has had this happen. Clutch picks up about an inch off the floor, and feels squishy the rest of the way out.

I drove it a hundred miles last Saturday and everything was fine, Sunday it felt a little funny, now today, it's as described as above.

I Drive this car only on weekends and have only put a thousand miles on it the last couple of years (way too little, I know...).

I bought the car at 95K in 2000 with a new clutch.

Anyone know exactly what's wrong, and exactly how to fix it easily...(or otherwise...).

This section always comes through...

Sounds like air or water is in the fluid.

I would change fluid & bleed the clutch several times. If this doesn't help, you may need to change the Master & Slave cylinder.

This same thing happened to my 85.

You may want to check out zfdoc.com, there is good Q & A info and diagnostic info on that site.

Stupid Q. You did check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder? Next look for leaks if the fluid is not up to the correct level. Check up under the pedal, waaay up where the push rod comes thru to the clutch pedal...check the carpet up there, if it's wet then the rear seal on the master is toast.

The slave usually only leaks out thru the front, side that is mounted on the bell housing, but sometimes you can feel fluid on the botton side of the slave.

The master can have an internal leak causing loss of pressure and that gives a funky pedal feel and inconsistant T/O operation.

Thanks for both replies. I did check the fluid level; it was full, but I know that's a small system. I checked the floor of the garage, and no evidence of a leak, but I have not jacked it up or checked up under the dash, thanks for that tip. I'm glad no one has indicated clutch internals as an issue, that's a fix I was not looking forward to.
