I was driving the '86 today and it was a little stubborn to put into drive. I pulled back into my driveway from driving it only to have something let loose so I can't get it out of drive. Any thoughts as to what it could be? I was leaning towards the control cable.
One thing that has me leaning towards that is I have always had some quirk with the shifter button coming back all the way out. Sometimes I would have to jiggle the shifter a little to get the button out. I figure if it was binding, the movement would have moved the cable around enough to stop the bind.
My 86 did something similar. But in my case , when I started it up, it lurched forward because the tranny was in drive but the shifer was in park. It turned out that the cable housing broke because of a poor spot weld. The cable itself was intact but the cable housing slipped back and forth. Changing the cable was not too difficult but it requires the console to come apart. I took the opportunity to repaint the orange pointer and flat black of the indicater. Changed leather boot as well. It solved my other problem of not being able to hold it in first gear and shift manually. Best of all, my car had the good manners to fail in drive so that I could drive it home!!
