Default 383 Stroker price help

Help on information on 383 motor. Found a shop that will rebuild my 1991 350 into a 383. Balanced and blue printed. Drive it in drive it out for $6000. I was thinking around $4000. Was I dreaming? I said there is 6 ways to build one and he said yes but one way if you want it to hold together. He said it would be as true as it could be for flat and inline. Had it in my mind I was ready to pop for $4000. but $6000. is a hard bight with a big chew and hard to swallow. One year warranty. Shop in Minneapolis Minnesota. They did good work on my 1993 1 ton duely two years ago. Spendy but it stayed home after I picked it up. No take it back or fix what they didn't finished. I'm just like a jack ***. I'm all ears. What your input? Speed ain't cheep! Thanks.

I think alot would depend on what they use ie: forged parts vs cast. Brand name etc. There are alot of little parts that will add up fast when trying to break down a price. Gaskets, fluids, oil, computer tuning etc. In my opinion 6000 is not to far out of line for turn key, but wait for others to speak up on that. Good luck.

I'm in the middle of a 383 build right now. Forged rotating assembly, Dart heads, custom intake, etc and all the supporting stuff(bigger radiator, injectors, fuel pump, centerforce cluth etc) and I'm over 11 grand. But I'm doing everything right. My labor just on the motor is almost 5k. You need to get IN WRITING exactly what he will do. What parts EXACTLY he will use. How is he plannings on prepping the block? Stock blocks are 2 bolt, you can splay bolt a 2 to a 4 but it's a grand just to splay it. Or is he getting a seperate block that is a 4 already? You have no idea the nightmare stories I can tell you, my car hasn't had a motor since Jan 8th. Do yourself a favor and get EVERY LITTLE DETAIL in writing. Leave nothing to chance, don't make my mistakes.

Here in Chicago a place called Speed Inc charges 6000 but it included afr heads and cam, rockers but its 3500 for the bottom end only. Look at there web site as a reference to use.

Boos Performance? If that's where you're going, I think you'll be happy with the results.

4 Gs will barely buy a quality short block, let alone a long block WITH installation. Your last sentence sums it up. BTW 6 Gs aint bad either. I'll bet by the time your out the door AND tuned its more than that. Just an opinion

Your quote there... That would be my relative guess in the price difference $6000 for someone else to do the work vs $4000 for you to do the work?

Yikes! Way more than I would pay, but it depends on what your goals are. I had a reknowned local shop build a budget 383 using good parts for a little over $2K. However, it is a mild build that will be in a street car, not on the strip. Don't foget all the other stuff that a 383 will need if you haven't upgraded already, like headers/exhaust, intake, AFPR, etc...

They built the motor, you took it out and put it in. Right? also the add ons your talking about will add up considerably, as I'm sure you can atest to.

Depending on what they're using, if it's decent stuff that's not too bad. R&Ring the engine, assembling and checking everything, etc. done right is a time consumming job. I've easily got $3500 or more in my latest short block. That's just a rough estimate, I really didn't keep up with every penny, I just did it. And I did everything except the machine work myself. I've got $1700 and change just in the crank, rods, pistons, rings and bearings. Forged stuff can be had cheaper but I wanted lightweight stuff. But they're not by far the most expensive components available either. I also had to get a neutral balanced flexplate because I went with complete neutral balance, not just internal. A fresh DR timing set, blue printed oil pump, hardened shaft, expensive head gaskets and all quality gaskets and seals, etc., etc., the list goes on. If they have to do any block clearancing, that takes a while. That's something I was able to do myself as well as the de-burring, optimizing oil returns, etc. The point is, you can get a lot of time, money and work wrapped up into such a project. But IMO, if they're using decent components and doing everything necessary for reliability and longevity, it's a very fair price. I couldn't and wouldn't do it for much less for someone, here at home in my own shop.

If I were gonna do it..I'd have the machine work done, use forged cause I like the idea of adding N20..I honestly think you should be doing some web searches cause going against the grain... I think you can do better.

This is where I am at

Machining to a 383 + installing all forged internals...............$2700
used Super Ram..................................... ......................$850
new TPIS headers................................. .......................$750
used AFR 190's................................... ..........................$1200
Cam/valvetrain.............................. ...............................$1000

and thats with me pulling my motor, dropping it off, bolting down the top half and dropping it back in my car. I didn't even include the small stuff like gaskets, bolts timing chain, oil pump, water pump. ETC.

HOLY CRAP...what have I got my self into

I just finished my 91 383 project. Had it done by a local racing engine shop. By the time I picked out all of the components I wanted for the internals, bought a Super Ram, chromed it, put Stainless Works headers on it, the reinstall, tuning the chip, I'm past 11 grand. Now if it would just start and stay running on the first crank, it would be heaven. Gotta keep it going with my foot for about a minute or so and then every thing is cool.
