Default Replacing Oxygen Sensors

Is there an easy, well easier way to change the oxygen sensors in a 94 A4 LT1? The driver side seems easy enough. I have the car lifted about 24"s and on jack stands. The passenger side is the one that looks like a bear to change out. I went and bought one wrench thinking it might work but nope. Now the good thing is that I did get one more wrench to add to my collection. I also bought one of those O2 sensor sockets. It will work on the drivers side. I don't have any codes or anything but the car has 92k on it and I am the second owner. I am just doing routine maintenance on it and want to have it running better. I do notice a rich smell from the exhaust so I figured what the heck. Thanks for any help in advance.

If you've got the 02 sensor wrench, you should be good-to-go.

I got mine from Sears (Craftsman) and I was able to wrench both of mine out, although the one on the driver's side was a bit of a pain.

I would suggest you pick up a couple of sensor connectors from NAPA or your local auto parts counter since the pigtails tend to get brittle from the exhaust heat and break while you attempt to unplug the old ones.

Thanks for the headsup about the connectors. I will go down and get some just in case. And knowing my luck I know I will break them if at all possible.

Well, I replaced the oxygen sensors. It went pretty smooth after I figured out how to get to them. For the passenger side, the easiest way to get to it was to remove the wheel well panel and come in from the top. Of course it didn't come off to easy until I let some PB Blaster soak in. Soaked both sides figuring if one side needed it then the other would as well. The drivers side was kind of difficult since I couldn't come in from the top but if you ise your oxygen sensor socket and a 1" extension you can use your ratchet and get it off. Your ratchet will ratchet down by the oil filter as you work it back and forth. Well, needless to say, it worked out great and I am extremely happy with myself. Here is a pic of the sensors along with one of the new Densos. It is amazing that the one sensor was even able to get a reading. No codes were being thrown but it did have a rich smell.

And you didn't even break one of the connectors. Good job!

NEVER take o2 sensors out cold...even if you do get em out cold, you are at high risk of destroying the female threads in the pipe or manifold...heat the pipe or manifold with an oxy-acety torch if the engine can't be run for heat....yes, they intend for you to burn your fingers to accomplish this

Well with me nothing ever goes 100% perfect. I had a problem when I had the hood up and then tried to open the garage door. Yes, Murphy was at my house. The garage door started opening and before I knew it, the thing that pulls the door up banged into my open hood. So now I have a scratch where it hit. One step forward and one step back. Next project is to replace all of the hoses with nice braided ones. Don't see how I can mess that one up but you never know. And yes, I definitely will remember to warm the exhaust up next time. I kept thinking about doing it and then kept looking at the car up on the jackstands and the next thing you know I'm up under the car. Thanks for all of the kind words and encouragement.

She is running great. I didn't get to drive it that much because I started another project changing out the DRLs on my C5. Hey, when the wife is away I get so much stuff done. I guess it's just trying to stay busy. But they were definitely covered in crap so I figure they have never been changed. It doesn't have that rich smell now either. The good thing is that next time I have to change them out, I'll know how to do it and since I put that antisieze on the threads they should come out pretty easy. My next thing to do is look for this small oil leak. It's not much but just enough to get on my nerves. Hey this car is right up my alley since I am one of those **** retentive people when it comes to cleaning.
