I have a 96 coupe wih 40k miles. Early this week I had a fire in the dash which stopped when i turned car off. Traced it to burnt horn and cruise control wires, replaced wires, seemed fine for the last 4-5 days. This morning I turned on the car and smoke started billowing from under dash and through air vents again.
It sound like you have a binch of short circuits under there. Perhaps the effects of time have worn off the insulation on a bundle of wires by rubbing on something, or maybe you have some sort of critter ( I know its hard to imagine) like a mouse, etc who has eaten the insulation. I would disassemble the lower dash and crawl into your car and trace all the wires, especially where they penetrate the firewall or touch any bracing that may have abraded the insulation of the wires. This rash of C4 fires is very disturbing.
I would definitely find the culprit before you do anything else. Disconnect your battery while it's parked.. there are WAY to many people on this forum that have lost their vette (and in some cases.. their HOUSE) to an electrical fire!
Definitely disconnect the battery and then tow it to a GM shop. You may have had one bad wire but with the wire burning more than once it may have caused additional damage which you aren't aware of. I would have a qualified tech go throught it with a fine tooth so you don't end up with a bunch of burnt plastic melted to a frame and motor.

Traced burnt wire to horn again, this time I removed "both" horns and checked to ground . The low horn shorted to ground, will replace soon.
Everything seems Ok so far, but try driving with a fire ext. in hand!
