Default drag racing torque converters?

What are some of the benefits of after market torque converters. Anything other than upping the stall rpm? As stall goes up how much does driveability suffer for a daily round town driver? Just from reading bits and pieces, it seems like a torque converter upgrade might be one of the better bang for buck upgrades for a basically stock 86 z51 w/3.07 gears?? Anyone have some real number differences (times) from just a converter change out there? Arlon

From what I have seen, there is generally a two tenth gain in the 1/4, or more. I had a 3500 RPM in a turbo car before my current car and loved it. I'm going to a 2400 stall with this car. Driveability may be nicer, less pulling through the breaks. With a high stall DD the slipping would make driveability worse. Run a search, lots of info. out there.

See my reply to cplonner's thread on the subject. Also, if you add a converter, add a cooler too. In fact, for longest transmission life, add a cooler no matter what.

Arlon,
86 vettes cam with a 2000 rpm stall converter. They are about the highest stalling vette converters made for a c4. Because of this, your car may only benefit a tenth or 2 in the 1/4 mile. You will appreciate it more(if you stay conservative) on the street than at the track. A looser converter lets a car idle smoother and accellerate quicker.

Since our 86s already have a 2026rpm converter anyway, there is really no need to upgrade. An upgrade to a smaller converter at a higher stall could give some small gain on a stock/nearly stock L98, but its not worth the total cost.
