I recently purchased an 87 Vette with an auto trans in it. I would like to know if the car is a three speed with overdrive or a four speed with overdrive. I feel it going into four speeds but the overdrive light in the dash does not come on. The car goes into fourth at about 45 mph, during normal driving conditions. At 65-70 mph the car going at 1900-2000 rpm. I get 25 mph on the freeway. Everything seems fine. The vehicle has 103,000 miles on it. I paid $6400 dollars for it. I love it.
but we do have an OD light that at least on mine and a few others with auto trannies have seen come on..I kinda think it may be a fuel economy indicator...there is also an upshift light. Don't worry about them.
Your auto trans is a 4 speed automatic with fourth gear being a 30% (.70:1) overdrive. In addition, you have a lock up torque converter that can feel like a fourth shift (into 5th gear?). The converter may lock up in both 3rd and 4th gears or maybe 4th only. Third gear is direct drive (1.00:1) as is the top gear in the older, three speed autos.
