I'll be honest, I didn't even know they existed until a few days ago. Anyway I have my car torn apart and the rack out. I ordered a kit from ecklers to replace the ball joints and outer tie rod ends, then realized the inners were not included. Do they wear out like the outers do? Are the difficult to replace and should the rack be out of the car, or can it be done with them in? This is the only thing i'm really waiting on before I stuff the rack back in, and drop in the block. I can easily do the outers and ball joints when the parts come.
I'd be interested to hear from people who've done inner tie rods as well. I've got one that has a little bit of play in it.
I briefly looked up the inners in the manual yesterday. Book said the rack had to come out. I think there's some kind of dowel pin or something that goes through the rod.
Corkvette1 recently replaced inner tie rods - check around he discovered for a few dollars more than you can replace the rack and the inner tie rods.
If you look in the service manual - there is no info on replacing the inner tie rods - only the rack.
Don't waste your $$ on the inners, just get a replacement rack. Been there, done it. You'll waste a lot of time and effort getting the old rods out (they're crimped in, a real PITA) only to discover the rack is worn, and the replacement cost isn't much more than the rods.

OK. This is what I needed to know. Does a new rack typically come with new outer tie rod ends as well?

Its not that difficult but You will need to fully extend each end to gain access to the swagged collar that locks the inner rod end. I used a hacksaw and carefully cut this collar away enough to turn the rod end. When the new end is installed I pinched the safety collar with a regular punch.
Do a google search the wrench used to take them out is pretty inexpensive. This is just an example an may not be the right size. They make them for GM, Ford, ect.
