Default Header Help NEW!!

My buddy has an 87 Vette L98. He ordered Melrose headers and they came in, all was good. I was looking at them trying to see how difficult the install will be. Im an F Body guy, I really dont know much about the L98. I got on the website to see the install instructions and I noticed on the headers there is an AIR (thats what we have anyway) like connection on the headers, but not on his car. I cant see anywhere to connect those lines up. The instructions say LT1/LT4 installation instructions.. Is it possible that he got the wrong headers?? Are the interchangeable?? Hes supposed to come over soon so help please. Any info or if you guys have a HOW TO website or threads would be great. Thanks

You Can Get Headers eitherway ...with or without the air tubes..Mine for my 86 will be without as I'm removeing the air pump and all it's goodies...Sound to me like he needs the ones with the tubes...will they exchange them ??

The LT series of engines have different headers, the primaries would be D-shaped as opposed to circular (I believe, I'm not really a LT-x guy ). Also, I believe the LT-x header bolts mount flush to the headers, whereas the L-98 has a little tube (about an inch) that holds the bolt away from the actual plate. On the 90 and later there is an AIR and EGR if those are street headers (unlike mine). Hope that helps some. Also, if you need to order some things, I HIGHLY recommend stage 8 locking header bolts. If you're like me and HATE header leaks they're God's gift.

It sounds as if someone may have already deleted the A.I.R. on his car. Do these headers have hook-ups with a branch to each tube or just one large hook-up per side? If it's the latter, they are LT1/4 headers. Most brands will interchange as far as fitment goes between an L98 and the LTx cars. But I have one set of headers for an early L98 that will not fit on my '95. The right side header interferes with the HVAC box. They are a NOS set of Doug Thorleys, no longer made for the C4.

We have a set of MELROSE on our 87' .I t sounds like he may have gotten the set with out the AIR/EGR that is not a big deal. If you contact Chris at Melrose he should be able to help you out. On there website you can see pics of those headers with/without the AIR/EGR. If you go with he ones you have just disconnect the wiring on the vacuum hook ups and put them under the plenum. you may not get any codes from the ecm but I had our unit retuned by ALVIN from PCMforLESS. I believe he will be pleased with the install easy and with the Stage8 bolts set them up once and so far no leaks.
