Default Correct power steering fluid for C4

My GM service manual refers to a GM fluid for my 91's power steering unit. Since it is the weekend and dealerships are closed I was wondering if anyone knows if these units can use any good dextron III ATF fluid? I noticed the sticky in this forum recommended Valvoline Synpower. Any suggestions? (Also, I am not sure why the fluid is low in the first place).

Thanks!

There is a reason why the Synpower is recommended... and that is because it meets or exceeds the requirements of GM. Get it, you won't be sorry.

As for leaks, you might see fluid on the crossmember. But these racks are prone to leak, either from the rack itself, cracked hoses or from seal failure caused by torn boots.

I think I read in the owner's manual that it uses DexIII. That's what I've been running with no problems yet.

The Synpower has some added conditioners and such that do a great job of quieting a noisy pump.

I suck mine out with a baster, then fill with ATF. I do it a few times until it looks clean. No problems.

ATF is NFG for power steering....use power steering fluid only....can't remember where i got that, long ago... i hate to make anything more complex than necessary but the reasons were compelling.

The rack-to-resovoir pipe is another leak-prone component.
