Default 4+3 Lockout Mod

In the latest issue of Cars and Parts Corvette, Richard Newton describes disabling the reverse lockout feature of our beloved 4+3's. He claims it makes it shift much better. He also discusses shorting the 2nd gear switch, in effect giving 8 speeds. I only use my O/D as a fifth gear, but he comments that the 2nd gear switch goes bad because whether or not the O/D is on, we are hitting the switch. I have lurked around the forum for a couple years and not seen either of the mods mentioned. Any thoughts, guys?

I was just about to post about this my self.
I did what it tells you to do in the article with no effect at all. Something I don't under stand about the article if you jumper the switch and unplug the harness how will the computer know it's in second gear. I think it's the harness that should be jumped not the switch. I'll try that tonight.

Reason 1st gear OD was disabled, is because of the hardware. The first ratio gears are small, not taking abuse to well. Having OD in 1st puts even more stress on a leak part.

I don't see the need to have it.

Nope, no real need for it. 1st gear is the weakest part of the 4 speed unit, no need for excess stress.

It's the harness not the switch that you jump.
This is a nice thing to have when I autox but I still use the clutch when I use it.

I don't see how that would work.... The overdrive has no hydraulic pressure unless the drive shaft is spinning. So the overdrive won't have the ability to engage until the car is rolling. It doesn't seem to me that engaging the overdrive in first gear from a dead stop would get any power to the rear wheels.

Maybe the car starts rolling in first gear and when the hydraulic pressure comes up enough to engage the overdrive it then slips into first gear overdrive?

I'd be afraid that jumping the second gear switch would allow the overdrive to begin functioning before the unit had sufficient hydraulic pressure and would cause the clutch pack to slip/burn.

Am I missing something here?
