I went to go purchase an 88 starter and got really confused as to what starter I need to buy to fit my 85. There was an ACDelco rebuilt or some nippendenso or something. Please help me pick the correct one...
Which "mini reduction" would you suggest? I need one for a new 383 at 10:1 in an 84. How much is required to make it fit?
the $80 ones seem to last as good as the $200 ones, get two of the cheapies and stock a spare....the cheapies do not fit both 153 and 168 tooth flywheels, you need to pick (most c4's use the 153t flywheel)...mostly a bolt-in deal, some wire wrestling req'd, do use a bent paperclip to check tooth clearance and shim the starter if necessary (use a dead battery to pull the starter into the flywheel without turning the engine to check)

Two more questions... How would you use the bent paperclip to check tooth clearance? Also, what flywheel would the stock 85 have?
The paper clip should slide into the valley between two ring gear teeth and just barely contact (or clear) the starter drive tooth. Shim the starter in or out to adjust the clearance. All C4s have 153 tooth starter ring gears.
