'84 with 92,000 miles on stock engine - just heard a tapping or knocking noise (for about 5 minutes while setting/driving in traffic then quit). Pulled over, lifted the hood - sounds like a stuck lifter? The car was about a quart low on oil, which it burns about every 4000 miles.
Sounds like the only choice you have to make is rebuilt or new crate motor. My motor was replaced at 182,000 miles. I opted for new short block. After all was said and done cost was around $3000. I did do much of the work myself.
It was well worth the effort.
Lifters seem to stick when they get older. It could be from varnish build up in the lifter or failing lifter. If you decide to change the lifters, you will have to replace the cam. New lifters on a used cam is not recommended. I would also change the timing chain at that time. Then there's the oil consumption which is probably valve guides. One qt ever 4k isn't bad. If you want to fix that, the heads need work. Of course you can see where this is going. Heads, cam, gaskets.........motor.
Re: Loud tapping or knocking noise (AquaMetallic94LT1)
Thanks for confirming my suspicions. My late dad was an auto tech and I have done quite a bit of work, but I always like to get a second opinion. :flag
