I'd say no. The descreened MAF was a popular "performance modification" for the TPI cars. Many people have run them without problems. I doubt itever provided any performance but its like the air foil, we know its worthless but people still buy it.
The purpose of the screen is to straighten out the airflow throught the MAF, so without it the air flow can be a little turbulent. It also may serve a purpose to block objects in the air flow from touching the hot wires.
the performance gains from the MAF screen removal would only be noticed at higher speeds. Unless it dies on you, it should be fine.
I had mine removed a while back, but the MAF died a year or so later, so I replaced it, I left the screens in. I didn't feel the need to remove them for the risk or some crap flying in past the filter housing and messing up the teeny wire/sensors in there and costing me another $400 to replace it
Never seen a documented test to show that it does anything on a stock motor. Most of the Auto Mags now say to leave it to protect the wire from debris. They also say that the MAF either reads the correct amount of air - or it doesn't. Makes sense. Hook up your scanner and see what it says. I'm running my spare, 17 year old screenless MAF (from when the experts were telling you to remove it) because my 2 year old screened MAF suddenly went lean. Runs great again (which is good because I had to ace the biennial smog test today - which it did).
