Default adjusting the 700r4 governor

this is in respond to a while back about a thread posted about adjusting the governor. I was wanting to know if i could get any input in on what you guys think i should do.

Ok here is my story, i got a governor from patc(raptor)rated at 5200, i put it in, 1-2 3700, 2-3 5200, 3-4 5200. I mess with the tv cable no change so i knew it was the governor then.
I then got on ebay and found one that was called a diamond weight governor, very small weights. i put it in and 1-2 5200, 2-3 dont know above 5500 havent gone higher, 3-4 same, higher then 5500.

I was reading that changing the same weights and or springs makes every gear shift at the same rpm, and just the springs or doing changes to just one side will progress the shifts differently.

i want every gear change to be at 5200, what would you do, being that the first governor is the closest to what it want, just the 1-2 is off, would that be the easiest one to fix, possibly just a spring change since the 2-3 and the 3-4 are good?

You cannot get them the same. The weights are responsible for wot shift and springs are part throttle. Due to variations in line pressure, the 12 is usually a few hundredrpm higher than the 2-3 shift. I have not figured out a way to get them to match each other.

then why does the 1-2 shift shift at 3700 and all the others shift at 5200, the weights arent being changed out. do you have a setup close to what i want or know someone that does then.
what about my other governor that shifts at 5200 from 1-2, is there anyway to get the other gear changes down around the same or a little lower

well the weights arent being changed out, why would it be low from 1-2 and fine at 2-3 and 3-4, what is your set up. could u get the 1-2 like at 5400 or 5500 and then like the 2-3 to like 5200, is so that would be great.

Mail me your patc governor. The one with the low 1-2 shift. If you like, I will take a stab at it. I do not have any extras governors at the moment. I have about 8 of them floating around the US.

No problem.
11.2 grams per weight is where I would start.

I'd like to raise the shifts points on mine as well. Please let us know what weights worked.

Here is a brief summary of my results with the B&M kit (different car of course (1983 LG4 camaro with 3.23 gears). If I was going to do it again, I'd probably get 2 kits to have 2 of each weight to simplify the set-up and keep it symmetric.

I went through 13 or so iterations with the B&M shift point kit (p/n 20236) back in 1994 on my 83 Z28 with 700R4 trans. This car was a cammed LG4 with 3.23 gears.

Here's what I ended up with for final calibration.

12) 5600rpm
#1 weight from kit (heaviest) with stock light spring (grey)
#2 weight from kit (2nd heaviest) with stock heavy spring (purple)

5600 rpm, 8/07/1994 ok.

Some more useful shift points from my notes:

3) 5200 rpm
#2 weight stock light spring (grey)
#1 weight stock heavy spring (purple)

4) 6200 rpm
#2 weight stock heavy spring (purple)
#3 weight stock light spring (grey)

From what I remember the heavy/light spring combination gave the best compromise between wot and part throttle shifts.

When I have some more time, I'll post the rest of my notes with varying shift points between 4000 to 6200 rpm.

Note: The stock governor had 2 heavy "C" weights along with the grey and purple springs and shifted around 4000 rpm.

Also be careful when removing the governor cover as its easy to punch a hole right through if using a screw driver to drive/pry out. Tap lighly only enough to create a gap, then pry the cover out. It will drip some hot tranny fluid down your sleeve. With some practice I could make changes pretty quickly and re-test.

for the 5200 shift, what weights did you use and what springs, and tell me if they are stock or from the kit, thanks got confused. and when you say 5200, u mean pretty much every gear or just first

The change of springs and weight on the governor it's a real challenge...(at least for me..)
I suffered of early WOT shift points. part throttle was right... only the 3 to 4 was a bit higher ( more than the 1 to 2 and the 2 to 3 at the same % of throttle applied)
I used a sligtly lighter wheight taken from the B&M shift kit. I left the stock springs in the unknow governor (not sure if it was a corvette governor).
The WOT shift points has changed to about 5000-5200 rpm on 1 to 2 and near 5500 from 2 to 3.
What changed more (undesired effect) was the part throttle!
I almost lost the 3 to 4 part throttle. I need to go over 80-85 mph to shift in OD...
I think that a role can be played by the individual shift valve springs on the valve body.... probably I have one on the 3 to 4 very stiff...
Pete??

3) 5200 rpm
#2 weight stock light spring (grey)
#1 weight stock heavy spring (purple)

Test 3) was with the weights from the B&M kit (#1 and #2) used with the stock springs. The purple spring was used with weight #1, and the grey spring was used with weight #2, in that order.

The 2-3 may have been a bit higher, as this seems to be the tendency. Since I was targetting a higher 1-2 shift rpm. I don't think I spent alot of time with this combination. I'll check my notes later to see if there is any comment on the 2-3 for test 3).

I think this would be a good starting point, an alternatve would be to use two #1 weights with the stock springs if you had another #1 weight available.

Update: I checked my old notes. No indication of the 2-3 shift point for test # 3) 5200 rpm. This was early in my testing so I probably never tested the 2-3.

For test 12), however 5600 rpm was written down twice, presumably indicating 1-2 and 2-3 shifts at 5600 rpm. I probably gave up at this point. It was a pretty slow car (mid 15s/high 13s with a 125 shot), so it was difficult to evaluate the 2-3 wot shift that would occur around 90 mph even at the track since this was right around the trap speed. If it overreved the 2-3 a little on the bottle, that was not a major concern.

what would be ideal tequilaboy is that i would have a 1-2 shift at about 5400, then the 2-3 shift at like 5200 and 3-4 around 5000 or so, but if i could just get them all to be pretty much the same at like 5200, that would be great.

Here is some good info on the workings of the governor:

http://yarchive.net/car/transmission.html

I just stumbled across it. For me, reusing the stock springs was the key for good all around performance and achieving similar 1-2 and 2-3 shift points. It seems simple enough, but it took me awhile to figure this out.

It sounds like you want slightly lighter weights to raise the 1-2, and perhaps lighter than stock springs (if available) to reduce the spread between shifts.
