Default remote starter?

I need to try a remote starter on my 89 roadster, I would think one would would put one connection on the positive post of the battery and the other end on the positive post of the starter, is this right. ANYONE?

I don't think so. I believe that the major alarm manufacturer's, like Clifford or Viper have an option for remote starting. I have also seen a unit in MAD. But I believe it would be very difficult to install. I got mine done at Circuit City (I know, I was asking for trouble). But the guys did an excellent job. No problems. Took them 11 hours though, and they knew what they were doing.

I don't like remote starters- too many horror stories about cars "warming up in the driveway", and then someone busts a window and drives it away after a few small "alterations". The worst I heard of down here- car was left in gear, owner hit remote start and it drove through a storefront and killed someone. The newer ones have alot of safety features built-in, which is why they are such a pain to install, and cost more. -J

By remote do you mean by a self contained starter switch such as a radio transmitter, or do you mean a switch with a long wire so that you can fool with the engine and bump the starter ? If you want a long wire and a momentary switch, then connect one wire to the positive batt terminal and the other to the purple wire on the clutch switch or if auto, the purple wire on the xmsn position switch. The purple wire goes to the start solenoid.

I have a Delphi remote start system hooked up with my Viper alarm... the engine dies the second you touch the brake pedal (which is required to put it into gear).. and it will not start if the gear selector is not in Park. It also turns off after 5 mins if the key hasn't been put in.

Remote start is complicated has heck. It needs to messure distributor rpm to know when to shut off, it has to turn the ignition on to power up the fuel pump and fire the injectors, and it has to have some sort of theft prevention.

My Python setup ran me $310, which included hatch pop and keyless entry. That was installed, because as soon as you see the wiring mess, you'll not want to touch it.

If you do want to try it yourself, Bill Reid saved a lot of money by doing his own.

Connect one lead of the momentary contact switch to +12 v and the other to the purple wire on the clutch sw or the xmsn position sw.

I used to install the Clifford version all the time. Its about 10 extra wires to the various locations on the car above what the basic alarm system uses. Autostarters are good but not necessary and are more luxury items. They are useful for warming or cooling your car before you get in and for keeping your battery charged when you are away. They also should only be installed on automatics and not shift cars as their is the danger of starting the car while it is in gear. Bad thing. The starters are set up to have a way to know what car they are installed in. If you don't know how they sense this, they will disable themselves after a short time. I have many years of installing experience. If you rate this job on a scale of one to 10, radio being a 2, sterio system with amps being a 5 and a basic alarm being a 4, alarm with options a 6, its about a 7.
If you don't feel confident doing it, leave it to the pros. Its worth the extra $100. You should be able to get on put in for around $300 as part of an alarm install. I would also get a proximity sensor since you have a roadster. This will set off the alarm if someone invades the airspace inside the cockpit of the car. Good thing to have with the roof down.
