Need a trans that will live
I have an 89 S.C 383 with a built 700R4 trans.
The thing will not shift to 4th now.
I have spoken with several builders and they say that the 700R will not live long at 500RWHP. And the cost to rebuild is like 2K for the best..
I may keep the auto but if I'm going to spend that much I thinking of installing a manual 5 or 6 speed.
I am considering a "Richmond" 6 speed but the Manufacturer says that it is only rated for 450 Ft lbs of torque. I'm exceeding that now.
How does the ZF rate?
Also, Richmond says that the 84-88 are the same but in 89 they changed the geometery of mounting. Anyone know more about this?
I don't want to spend big money for more broken parts
Anybody using a good combo that will work in an 89?

A black tag ZF is rated at 450 ft-lbs, but I know it will take more.
If you are drag racing, you may want to consider a 4L80E (or 4L85E). They are serious transmissions. Expect to pay serious money, too... about $5k all told. The 4L8xE is based on the TH400, with an overdrive unit attached.

Im looking into that trans for my 67' elcamino build up. It will be an adventurous joy installing and modifing but I've read enough and am convinced its the best overdrive that handles plenty of hp/tq.
