I just tried to install my MAD VATS bypass. No luck. I removed the panel directly under the sreering column but could not find a connector that even remotely resembles the one in the instruction diagram. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for your imput. Ed.
The wires from the contacts in the ign sw come down the steering column and out at the base of the column under the carpet. There is a 2 pin connector and the wire continues over to the passenger side to the VATS module.
Strange, my vats connector was up under the plastic panel above my right knee on my 89 roadster, maybe I hooked it up wrong and this is why it doesn't start when hot, any suggestions?
Cied has an 87 and so do I. The floor is where my VATS connector is and I'm assuming his is also. If your VATS bypass connection disconnects when it is hot, then your start solenoid would not click in. Measure the volts on the starter battery connection and to the starter case when it is hot to be sure that the voltage is not falling below 9.0 volts. The start solenoid has two windings , one of large wire for large pull in force and this disconnects on pull in to a smaller coil for holding in and it will hold in at much lower than 12 volts. If your starter doesn't have full battery voltage when it is hot (due to high connection resistance when hot), then this might be the reason it won't crank .
I found out about this site when I started researching why my 87 would'nt start....I am trying the bypass method using a resistor l;matched to my key pellet....Is the VATS wire a thin hard shelled wire with 4 small wires in it...red,grn,blue and yellow??...if not, I guess I cut the wrong one...oooppppsss, can anyone tell me the correct answer...I would really like to drive this car this week.....Thanks for the help.
The wires coming from the contacts in the ignition switch that make with the pellet in your key come down the steering column and out at the base and under the carpet. There is a 2 pin connector that carries the 2 wires over to the VATS module on the passenger side of the car. Unplug the connector and clip your resistor onto the pins of the wire going to the VATS module and your VATS will be bypassed. You can measure the wire coming from the column with an ohmeter with your key in place and the ohmeter should read the same as the pellet. I don't recommend bypassing the VATS any longer than to replace the ign sw because your C4 can easily be stolen by bashing the column and jumping the ignition which is how 99% of all cars are stolen.
