Default So PeteK, the time has come....

Can you give me and all of us contemplating a rebuild and upgrade for the 4L60E, a parts list with your recommendations for replacement parts and needed improvements? Although I haven't dynoed the newest engine yet, I'm expecting close to 500 lbs.-ft. of torque and would like a little cushion beyond that in case I get mod-crazy again. Also, the best places to buy parts as well as any and all info you'd care to impart. Thanks in advance for me and anyone else who may benefit from your wisdom.

This is a good question. I don't see many things in the FAQ sections regarding beefing up transmissions. I'm OK for now but with a 383 under contemplation, it's something I may need in the future.

Thank you sir and no hurry. I'm putting in a good used one in the meantime so I can take my time building it.

What about a 4L80E conversion? Is it doable? How much more abuse could it handle if built stronger?

Thanks

I started buying parts from Brian Carr at Oregon Performace. He is an e-bay seller with a store. His parts are 1st quality and prices are pretty good.
For a 500+ ft pound car, I like to use:
Alto red clutch kit with Kolene steels.
Kevlar band
29 element borg warner sprag
borg warner lo-roller clutch
stock 10 vane pump
stock 4 pinion planetaries
Beast reaction shell
vette servo
transgo shift kit
reverse piston orifice
high rev sping kit with hardened pump rings
white accumulator springs
.471 boost valve
o ring style lo reverse boost valve (sonnax brand)
Transgo seperator plate

Stuff that is not in the rebuid kit, but you will likely need:
Alot of these parts are inexpensive from the gm stealer:
pwm solenoid
lock up solenoid
pump vanes
new front seal retainer
Filter
new accumulator pistons
Bushing kit
Thrust washer and selective washer kit
servo check ball capsule

Please note that the parts I use work well for me and a few close racing buddies. Others may disagree with some of my parts selections. Until we start having failures, I will continue to use what works for me.
I am looking forward to tearing into my buddy Tom's trans this winter. We have a stock 700 with a beast reacttion shell only, behind a 600 ft lb car. He has 3 full seasons of racing on it. I currently works fine, but we are curious to see what is hurting. If I remember, I will post up some pics when it comes apart.

Pete, I very much appreciate your taking the time to compile this comprehensive parts list. Hopefully I won't have to send you a big box of parts half way through the build!

It doesn't look any worse than when I have a Cummins engine or something else strewn over two or three work benches at work. I'm curious, did you ever find a place to install those cylinder heads on an automatic trans?

Don't let us scare you.
The trick is subassemblies. Build them one at a time and reassemble. Nuthin to it.

Ain't skeered! But that doesn't mean I might not have a zillion more questions before the smoke clears.

Join the club. I've sent so many PM's to Pete in last few days that my PC keyboard will melt and I haven't even started with rebuild.

Do you have a manual? I've got a copy of an early GM manual for the 700R I could send you. It's not Corvette specific but a coworker borrowed it when rebuilding the tranny in his '92 pick-up and said it was an asset.

Thanks Chris. I ordered ATSG manuals and rebuild DVD. From what I've seen here on forum, these manuals should be very helpful.
Thanks again.

You can find both manuals and DVD on this page. However, I bought manuals from e-bay.
